Dr. Ohta & the Killer Prophet

Episode of Morbid · June 11, 2026 · 1 h 7 min

Morbid hosts Ash Kelley and Alaina Urquhart recount the 1970 murders of the Ohta family and Dorothy Cadwallader by John Linley Frazier in Santa Cruz County.

Summary

After opening banter about pollen, Kelley's 30th birthday, an upcoming Radio City Music Hall show and Urquhart's novel The Butcher Legacy, the hosts turned to the October 19, 1970 killings at the Soquel, California home of ophthalmologist Dr. Victor Ohta. Firefighters responding to a house fire found Ohta, his wife Virginia, sons Derek and Taggart, and secretary Dorothy Cadwallader shot and floating in the pool, bound with Ohta's silk scarves. A typewritten note signed with the names of four tarot knights warned of World War III against those who harm the environment. The narrator placed the case amid the fear generated by the Manson Family murders and the Zodiac Killer, and noted it was described as the first murder in Santa Cruz County's history.

The episode described the victims' backgrounds and how suspicion fell on the local hippie community around The Catalyst cafe, which faced harassment and bomb threats. Police initially withheld the note; once it was published, Catalyst owner Roger Krohn recognized its language as the ranting of a customer, John Linley Frazier. The narrator detailed Frazier's childhood of severe illness, injuries, foster care, juvenile crime and animal cruelty, a head injury in a 1970 car accident after which he reportedly heard voices, and his move to a shack near the Ohta home, from which neighbors later said he watched the family with binoculars. Both hosts repeatedly criticized the witnesses' hesitation to report what they had seen.

Frazier was arrested on October 23, 1970, and told police God had instructed him to kill the family for materialism. He was convicted of five counts of first-degree murder in 1971 and found legally sane, a finding the narrator agreed with, citing his premeditation. His death sentence was commuted to life after the California Supreme Court struck down the death penalty in 1972, and he died by suicide in Mule Creek State Prison in 2009. The related murder of gas station attendant Tom DiCecco remained unsolved. The episode closed with a fun fact about Switzerland's ban on owning a single guinea pig.

From the publisher

In the early evening of October 19, 1970, police and firefighters were called to the Santa Cruz County home of Dr. Victor Ohta, a well-respected ophthalmologist, for a report of a house fire. Intending to siphon water from the pool out back, firefighters ran a hose from the truck to the backyard. However, when they reached the pool, the made a horrible discovery—floating in the pool were the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Ohta, as well as their two children, and the doctor’s secretary, Dorothy Cadwallader. When they searched the scene, investigators discovered a cryptic note stuck under the windshield wiper of Victor Ohta’s car that made references to the occult and the counterculture movement. At the time of the murders, Southern California was experiencing an unprecedented wave of violent murders by multiple serial and spree killers, as well as the notorious murders committed by the Manson family. Given the content of the note and the potentially ritualistic way in which the Ohta family had been killed, investigators and residents couldn’t help but fear that they may have another murderous cult on their hands.
