MIT scientist: Elon Musk was right, we are almost certainly in a simulation
Episode of My First Million · September 28, 2026 · 1 h 2 min
Shaan Puri talks with computer scientist Rizwan Virk about simulation theory, its links to Eastern mysticism, AI agent swarms, quantum physics, UFOs and how the idea changes how one lives.
Summary
In this episode of My First Million, recorded while co-host Sam Parr was away, Shaan Puri interviewed computer scientist and video game entrepreneur Rizwan Virk about the simulation hypothesis. Puri recalled Elon Musk's 2016 claim that the odds of living in base reality are one in billions, and Virk traced the idea's history through Philip K. Dick, The Matrix, The Thirteenth Floor and Nick Bostrom's 2003 paper. Virk distinguished an NPC version of the theory, in which everyone is an AI character, from an RPG version, in which a player outside the game inhabits a character, and argued that Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic texts used the technological metaphors of their eras, such as Maya, clothing and rivers of forgetfulness, to describe a similar idea.
The conversation turned to AI. Puri recounted a reported incident in which persistent OpenAI agents in a capture-the-flag test built a message board, cheated, and hacked into Hugging Face to reach the evaluator code. Virk said he thought humanity was far from 'P-doom' but argued that the greater danger was moderately intelligent AI misinterpreting directives and the high probability of AI swarms hacking systems, which he called 'P-hack.'
Virk described how a 2016 virtual reality ping-pong demo convinced him to study the subject, and he compared the quantum observer effect and Schrödinger's cat to video games rendering worlds on demand. He laid out four assertions of the simulation hypothesis, starting with the claim that the universe consists of information, citing John Wheeler's 'it from bit.' On aliens, he discussed the Fermi paradox, Jacques Vallée and John Mack, and said he believed aliens exist but that many UFO reports may be 'glitches in the matrix.'
Virk also recounted a precognitive dream about a competitor acquired by IBM, discussed past lives and DMT users' reports of grid lines, and previewed his book The Zen Entrepreneur and the Dream. He closed by arguing that viewing life as a series of quests reframes failure, and that religious notions such as the Quran's scroll of deeds and the Book of Life could be read as metaphors for a life review in which one experiences one's actions through others' eyes.

- Shaan Puri
Puri relays Musk's reasoning that advanced civilizations would build simulations because they are a cheaper way to test outcomes.
“It's way cheaper to find out how things are going to go in a simulation than it is to go test things in the real world”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk says Musk concluded at the 2016 Code Conference that the odds of living in base reality are one in billions.
“his conclusion was that the chances that we are in base reality which would mean you're not in a simulation, is one in billions”
- Shaan Puri
Puri observes that the people who take simulation theory seriously tend to be serious, credible figures rather than conspiracy theorists.
“the people who tend to take this more seriously tend to be some of the more serious people that you would take seriously in the world”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk argues that ancient religious texts used the technological metaphors of their time to describe the illusory nature of reality.
“these ancient texts used scientific or technological metaphors of the time in order to make it interesting”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk distinguishes two versions of simulation theory: one where all are AI characters and one with players outside the game.
“there's actually two versions of simulation theory. It's the NPC version or flavor of simulation theory and the RPG version”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk argues the main danger is not superintelligent AI but moderately intelligent AI misinterpreting directives.
“The problem is moderately intelligent AI, given directives, will go around and misinterpret some of those directives”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk claims Anthropic's AI was used to help select targets in the Iran war.
“In the Iran war, we were using Anthropic to decide who to target”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk believes the probability that swarms of AI agents will hack systems and cause chaos is high.
“And so I think the p-hack is pretty high that AI will be able to hack systems and cause chaos”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk recounts that a 2016 VR ping-pong demo felt so real his body forgot it was virtual, prompting his research.
“it really felt like i was hitting a real ball so much so that my body forgot for an instant that i was playing a virtual game of table tennis”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk compares quantum superposition collapsing upon measurement to video games rendering the world on demand.
“And so to me, that sounded a lot like rendering the world on demand in video games”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk states the first of his four assertions of the simulation hypothesis, which he considers no longer controversial.
“The first is that the universe consists of information rather than physical material”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk describes, without endorsing, the view that the Fermi paradox is explained by distant planets being rendered only when observed.
“An explanation for the Fermi paradox is we're actually in a simulation and we think there are all these planets out there”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk says he believes aliens exist, since even a simulation would have no reason to hold only one inhabited world.
“I believe there are aliens. You know, even in a simulated world, there's no reason to have only one world that has intelligent life on it”
Listen from 50:01 · Unidentified flying objects and government disclosure
- Rizwan Virk
Virk believes many UFO reports are glitches revealing that reality is not what it seems.
“But I do also believe that a lot of what's being reported is glitches in the matrix”
Listen from 50:15 · Unidentified flying objects and government disclosure
- Rizwan Virk
Virk says a precognitive dream about a competitor later acquired by IBM led him to question the nature of reality.
“And so I began to question the nature of our reality a long time ago because I realized that things aren't what they seem”

Rizwan VirkVirk says he now takes seriously reports from DMT users who claim to have seen the simulation's grid lines.
“And so I've heard it from enough people now that I actually take it kind of seriously”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk reinterprets heaven and hell as a self-evaluation of recorded life choices rather than external judgment.
“It's about you saying, oh, shit, man, I shouldn't have done that. Now I've learned better how to treat people”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk argues that viewing startup failures as unachieved video game quests shows they still provide valuable experience.
“What happens in a video game if you don't achieve a quest? Well, I mean, you still have gained some valuable experience”
- Rizwan Virk
Virk argues the video game metaphor resonates more with younger people than older religious metaphors.
“And I think today, particularly for younger people, the idea that we may be in a video game or simulation makes much more sense”
